COMMENTARIES BY JANICE SCOTT-REEDER

Surviving in a house full of cats with the flu requires a new set of skills. First off, never leave the tag dangling over the side of your herbal tea cup unless you want to clean up tea, sweep up broken pottery and dry off one really upset cat. Of course a nice cup of hot tea would be lovely but my temporary cap will come off so I have been making do with tepid tea, coffee and soup.
Then there is the fact that your normal lay on your back and let Napoleon stretch out on you can’t happen because your lungs fill up and you start coughing. Napoleon is not a happy camper. He and Josephina usually have a lick fest across me in the morning. One of these days those two tongues are going to get tangled in a knot and I have no idea how I will get them apart. I keep reaching for my camera to record this, but as usual, when there is a really good picture to be taken, the camera takes a hike.
I really hate not having home DSL but there is nothing I can do about it. I am used to being able to look things up, communicate via email and generally connect with the world. Now I feel totally isolated and to add insult to injury, my cell phone battery is going bad.
I slept most of Sunday. Well, I was up in the morning, got the forecast written and transmitted, thanks to George driving me to the shop, and then I came home, took a shower and went to bed where I stayed. I am up at 7 AM Monday, after coughing all night and sleeping fitfully but I am well enough to go and get my permanent crown installed and my first physical therapy session. I am going to stop at Walgreens on the way and get a small bottle of Tylenol. Being jittery in the daytime is not so bad and this headache I have had since Saturday is way worse. Jittery I can cope with.
I admit to being curious about the physical therapy. I have arthritis and calcification of the tendon in my shoulder. I cannot figure out what therapy is going to do for it. It seems to me the condition is pretty darned fixed. I shall learn.
It is a wet, cool morning in South Florida and I am hoping for clear roads as I started the stupid coughing again. Movement is not good.
Fiona shall henceforth be known as Fiona, the Black Hole of Sausage. I had left two large pieces of sausage for Josephina and Purdy von Sweets. They both turned their little noses up at it. In came Fiona and down went both pieces. Yesterday she drove me nuts trying to throw herself into my breakfast. I guess I’m not the only thing that loves Bob Evan’s Sausage Patties. One thing we cannot figure out is why the patties are so much cheaper than the links. Doesn’t matter. I’ll eat it in any shape.
I received my new crown at Spodak Dental today. You can’t tell it is a cap. It looks much better than original tooth, I have no pain and it fits perfectly. I stopped and got the Tylenol, generic of course, on sale at Walgreens. It took two but the headache is gone. You will really love the Walgreens at Palmetto and 441. I got two shawls for 10.00. That was for both of them and they are gorgeous. You know I got the purple multi ones. Now I know my neck and shoulder hurt. Geez, get rid of one pain, get another one.
I have learned that they may be able to increase my range of movement but unless surgery removed the calcium nodules, I will continue to have the pain.
I should be celebrating passage of the Healthcare Bill, but its success is overshadowed by the antics of the far right. One Congressman was sat on by an anti-abortion protestor. Others were called the N word. It amazes me that these people are willing to sacrifice the health and welfare of thousands of children already born and the health of the American people over a religious argument about when the soul enters the body. The majority, going to at least 75% of religions believe it occurs at first breath. Some of the exact religions opposing abortion, once refused to allow a baby to buried on sanctified ground if it had not taken its first breath. I wonder if these people are ever going to realize they are nothing more than pawns in a much larger game where they are used as cannon fodder for economic issues that big corporations do not want to see passed. The insurance industry has been discriminating against women since day one. They refused to cover birth control pills but would cover Viagra. They have reduced the number of days a woman can spend in the hospital from a week to less than a day. They have reduced the number of days a woman can spend in the hospital after breast cancer surgery to almost an out patient procedure sending them home with drainage tubes sticking out. Many refuse to cover reconstructive surgery. Guess what? Once again most of the same companies happily cover penal implants and pumps. Prior to this bill, a child born with a continuing medical problem would be denied coverage by the next company if their parents lost their coverage by moving to another job. Lifetime limits made care of children with medical problems the responsibility of the tax payers. When are these women going to wake up and realize they are being screwed every possible way?
