I’ve often said you should make certain who you are supporting. Who hasn’t heard about poor little Aislin who is too small to qualify for insurance with United HeathCare (which just happens to be my insurance company and took me from Cigna complete with High Blood Pressure without a complain and has so far treated me right.)? Well, maybe you should hear from her father: "Aislin's father Rob was quoted as saying that even though he doesn't support universal health care, this battle over insuring his daughter has made him want insurance companies to have more "legitimate reasons for denying coverage."
In other words: Universal health care or a public option is dirty socialism but forcing a private company to provide a service to someone and possibly take a loss financially is OK. No it is not okay. You are either on one side of the fence or the other. Either government provides what private companies cannot because of low profit or you are a fascist who believes in total government control of all private companies, ie. a dictatorship. I have a new guideline for insurance companies. I call it the “too darned stupid to live and your kids probably aren’t much smarter preexisting condition”. Under that one, he doesn’t get insurance either.
Before you attack United HealthCare, consider the why of this guideline. A severely undersized child like that had to get that way somehow and normally it is starvation or no prenatal care for the mother. Even if the condition is due to dwarfism or being a midget, it brings a host of physical disabilities which are going to be very expensive and being private companies, insurance companies have the right to a profit. Walmart has the right to sell cheap stuff and Neiman Marcus has the right to sell expensive stuff. Government doesn’t have the right to force Walmart to carry designer labels and 100,000.00 items. If you think the government has the right to interfere in what a company stocks and how much money they make off that stock then you are not a Capitalist or in favor of a Democracy you are a socialist, communist or fascist. So let’s everyone put on their proper hats. However, if you are in favor of the government providing a service the private companies have deemed too expensive or unprofitable to provide, you could be any of the above. Remember, the reason for Medicare was that insuring people over 65 was too risky and expensive for private insurance companies once the over 64 population grew so large. That is why government had to take over the process. That is why we have an interstate road system, national parks and public schools. Brains aren’t just for Zombies to eat…they are for using.
In another topic, much has been made over the setting and the price of the James Ray workshop. I decided to check out Angel Valley Retreats and made a discovery. I have definitely stayed in worse motels than that retreat. Actually, I regularly do. It is very upscale. The cabins are an upgrade from their regular rooms. This retreat attracts very high end speakers like Barbara D’angelo to hold week long retreats. In other words, nothing going on there is cheap. When examining your role to a god, someone has to play the god in role playing exercises. I have never been a big fan of role playing exercises but they are really big in psychology and the self help field. So, I think we had better remove hyped from the facts and find out exactly why these people died and what went wrong before any more sweat lodges in the area are attempted.
It is easy to say heat prostration but let’s look at something else: Hantavirus which is widespread in the area. Although it normally takes a while to kill you, the symptoms are eerily like those reported. It is spread via rodent droppings which could easily have been on the rocks used for heating and the ground in the sweat lodge.
Now let’s look at Legionnaires’ Disease. I copied this from Wikipedia.
Legionellosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Legionella.[1][2] Over 90% of legionellosis cases are caused by Legionella pneumophila, a ubiquitous aquatic organism that thrives in temperatures between 25 and 45 °C (77 and 113 °F), with an optimum around 35 °C (95 °F).[3]
Legionellosis takes two distinct forms:
Legionnaires' disease, also known as "Legion Fever"[4] (archaic), is the more severe form of the infection and produces pneumonia.[5]
Pontiac fever is caused by the same bacterium, but produces a milder respiratory illness without pneumonia which resembles acute influenza.[5]
Legionnaires' disease acquired its name in July 1976 when an outbreak of pneumonia occurred among people attending a convention of the American Legion in Philadelphia. On January 18, 1977 the causative agent was identified as a previously unknown bacterium, subsequently named Legionella.
An estimated 8,000 to 18,000 people get legionellosis in the United States each year.[3] Some people can be infected with the Legionella bacterium and have only mild symptoms or no illness at all.
Outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease receive significant media attention. However, this disease usually occurs as single, isolated cases not associated with any recognized outbreak. When outbreaks do occur, they are usually in the summer and early autumn, though cases may occur at any time of year. The fatality rate of Legionnaires' disease has ranged from 5% to 30% during various outbreaks.
Check out what I placed in bold. This is why we need a full autopsy and medical report before we start pointing fingers. We could be potentially dealing with something new and more deadly what we have seen before.
