COMMENTARIES BY JANICE SCOTT-REEDER

Each day I try to get physically stronger but it is an uphill battle. Today by left shoulder let out a loud pop, pain followed and now I really have to make an appointment with an orthopedic doctor as I can’t afford to lose both shoulders. Old age sucks.
It is amazing how much we fear Fiona. What if she thinks my toes are Vienna sausages? Well, I took a picture of her next to Napoleon, who is a normal sized cat. You can see she really is a miniature cat. She is not that much younger than he is.
The plants in the one topsy turvy strawberry planter have really taken hold and look great! I think I am going to get a strawberry harvest after all. Even the lettuce plant looks great. I’m not too sure about the tomato as it is trying to grow up hanging out the bottom of it’s bag.
I was out communing with the bees while doing the laundry. There really is no choice as the bee hive is about three feet from the washer and drier. The way I was moaning and cracking my joints as I tried to do the laundry I think they decided to wait until I keeled over as there was no point in wasting their time killing me. I also reminded them who buys the flowers, brings them home and plants them. Nothing like a little blackmail to keep them on their toes.
I am very happy with my last batch of plants. Now it is time to look at ordering some for the spring. Parks has a big sale on strawberry plants this week.
Some of us who are historically literate are simply shaking our heads. Don’t they teach history in school any more? Have the history books been rewritten? Is today being rewritten? Some times my eyes just roll around in my head. Today’s new history is that Social Security was a give away program. Ah, folks, my parents were alive when Social Security was created and it was no give away. Good Goddess, I heard the story at least once a week growing up. The rest of the week I got to hear about the Great Depression both of them lived through. Oh, and they walked 5 miles to school every day in 8 foot snow. Social Security was soundly, at that time, based on the number of workers paying into the system exceeding the number of old folks collecting checks. The average life expectancy was 68 and a really old person was 75. Hit your 80’s and you were doing something really right! I think you can see how life expectancy jumped in those years. That unbalanced the system. Keep in mind, life expectancy had been pretty level for many years when Social Security was invented and there were some really big name scientists willing to swear no one would have the life expectancy we have today. If the tobacco companies would have had their way, no one would. No one guessed the birth rate would decline, either. The fifties were going to continue forever. People didn’t need medical insurance back then either because medical care was affordable. My parents actually paid in full in cash for the C-section for my birth and a month in the hospital for my mother with me. Can anyone do that today that isn’t independently wealthy and in this country? The bill would be in the millions of dollars. No one foresaw that happening. No one foresaw an average month of medication costing over $600.00 when medicare was created for the elderly. They did see medical costs and insurance premiums (if you could get them) were out distancing anyone’s ability on retirement and social security to pay. They also saw that things like property taxes and utilities were outdistancing social security payments at a running leap. Things simply have become too expensive, too fast. That is why medicare was created. That is why we have to have a health care bill passed. It may, it will not be perfect. It is a starting point. If we wait for perfection, we are never going to have anything. Any idiot should be able to tell you that. How many times have you waited for the time to be right and never gotten anything done? How many relationships have you messed up waiting for the right time to say something? How many times have you been starting your own business, dieting, quitting smoking or taking up that hobby just as soon as things were right? Have you started any of those things? Think about it. As a very smart man once said: “There is no time like the present.” Or as Nike puts it: “Just do it!”
Where is the money going to come from? I have a feeling they are going to find it. Why? Well, if anyone has been following politics in Dade and Broward Counties, Florida, you know that just about everyone is under investigation. It turns out that monies that were protected under law and must be used for things like construction, education, public works and public health have been quietly transferred into the politicians’ private pockets via their constant salary increases and to their pet (defined as my friend is running it) projects so they could show a balanced budget and use that credit statement to borrow even more money to funnel into the above mentioned projects. Yup, being elected to any office in either county is a gravy train for you and your family and all their friends. Funny thing, the average homeowner can’t afford to pay their property taxes. I think if we turn enough of congress upside down and shake hard, we’ll find plenty of funding for everything we as a people need on the floor. Make no mistake about it, the only time anyone in Congress screams about taxes is when it is their pocket that is about to be picked.
The most bitter regrets are not the things we have done but the things we did not do.

COMMENTARIES BY JANICE SCOTT-REEDER

What a day! First stop was the doctor with George. It is nice to not be the one being poked and prodded for a change. Then we stopped at Costco as I was running really low on gas. I got some chopped liver as eating was becoming optional. Then it was off to the dentist where the lovely assistant ground the temp cap down so I could actually close my mouth without hitting the tooth. It was way too high. The pain abated and we stopped at IHOP and got me some scrambled eggs as I had not eaten anything all day. When you can’t chew without excruciating pain, you quickly stop eating. Then it was home and over to Staples to make copies of all the crap the auditing firm wanted to prove I am George’s wife. After thirty eight and a half years they should know I am too crazy to change horses. Then on to the PO to overnight it. By then I was dropping fast, so we continued on to Target to get George’s prescription and an epiphany. He came back to the table, because I had dropped in the little restaurant in there, and said 40.00 was awful expensive for a 3 week supply of pills. So I said something to the effect that he should see it without the insurance paying part. Well, he went back to the pharmacy because he didn’t believe the insurance was paying part of it and returned rather glassy eyed. Without insurance it is, rounded up a few pennies: $130.00 for three weeks. I could see the…what am I going to do if I have to take this stuff permanently…thought circling like a shark in his brain and he finally realized how I feel about my BP medicine. There is no way we can afford it without insurance and it really is the only thing I can take. I went through all the others and the side effects were horrendous. I don’t think George is enjoying his visit into my world.
I would love to know where the idea the American people have rejected healthcare reform came from. The only people I have seen rejecting it are a bunch of rich Republican congress people who already enjoy the lavish benefits of a government administered, managed and paid for health care plan. Hey, idiots, just give us your health care plan. We’ll be happy. I’d like a visit to Walter Read right now, since I can no longer lift my right arm over my head or extend it forward, paid for by the government. If it it’s good enough for Congress, it’s good enough for me. Bring it on.
Anyway, I spent the entire day driving from one end of this county to the other end of the next county, I can no longer lift anything with my right hand and my shoulder is worse than the toothache I had. Where I am going to find the money to see an orthopedic man, I do not know but it is becoming critical or I am not going to be putting my clothes on or driving.
All the cat cuteness occurred while we were out. They saved the orneriness for our return. Fiona tried to jump head first into the container of chopped liver. Flame is trying to fish the pot of chicken off the stove George is cooking for them and if the turtle should happen to fall in the pot, all the better. Last night I got a chicken leg out and discovered I could not chew it so I started dividing it up for the cats. Fiona and Lady Jayne were sitting on the stool. So, I put a little piece in front of Fiona and a large piece in front of Lady Jayne. Fiona pelicaned the small piece, grabbed the big piece and headed for parts unknown before Lady Jayne could look down. Lady Jayne sat there for a couple of minutes looking at the stool, certain there had been meat there. The same thing happened a couple of weeks ago. Prescious and Bat the Cat had a hissing contest over a chicken leg, both heads went down at the same time and the floor was empty. Fiona was dragging the leg off and it was so big she was straddling it and duck walking. Fiona is vicious where meat is concerned. I hope she never considers me edible.
We have a lost cat in Hillsboro Pines, so everyone keep your eyes open. The signs are everywhere. I looked every time I drove through today but I saw nary a cat. I mean, I saw no cats. I guess they don’t come out until evening and the last one looked hurt running across the street. It was headed to its home at a good clip so I didn’t try to stop and help. I did see one large brown dog wandering around. I am glad I keep all my cats in the house.
How bad is the economy? After Bush’s eight years of uncontrolled spending and borrowing from China, 7 Catholic schools closed down here. Today another one went under in Miami. Why is this important? This school was going on three generations of family members going there. When people abandon religious schools and they go under for lack of funding, it is really, really bad. Religion is the last thing people abandon. I have never, in 59 years, seen a Catholic school close for lack of funding. All the Bush administration did was reward shipping our jobs overseas and now it is too late to turn the tide. Just ask George. His job is going to India. Just between you and me, I see no way anyone can stop this. President Obama has done his best, but he is trying to plug a Titanic sized leak with bubblegum because bubblegum is all we have left. And like the Titanic, most of Bush’s really dirty tricks were way below the level of the public’s view. Just remember folks, it was the Republican’s last eight years that put us here, even though they have conveniently forgotten they took a balanced budged and ran up the largest deficit in history. You know, for people who are against spending they sure do a lot of it…all in the name of national security. For people who are against big government, they created the largest expansion since Medicare was created. They created an whole new department called Homeland Security. Wow, I guess they forgot that. Before you scream, learn this: Homeland Security’s job was done by the National Security Agency, the Secret Service and the FBI. Bush created a whole new agency to duplicate their jobs rather than improving the coordination of information between agencies. And what did he achieve except some sweetheart contracts for his buds? Absolutely nothing as the last terrorist attack on a jetliner proved. Now we have five agencies not sharing their information instead of four. Selective memory must be a wonderful thing. Those condos in Dubai must sit on the River Denial.
Oh, and I might add, business as usual. The local cops have always done their best not to cooperate with the next police department or the FBI and constantly bicker over jurisdiction. Why would you think government agencies would be any different?

COMMENTARIES BY JANICE SCOTT-REEDER

Only a cat can lead you down the path of total absurdity with a perfectly straight face. Take last night. I had bought a lovely red and white flowered African violet and had it decorating my room. Fortunately I left the plastic floral collar on it as I looked up, and having made the huge mistake of allowing one gigantic faux Persian named Lady Jayne into the room, my African violet was heading to parts unknown in her mouth. I grabbed the edge of the plastic collar, stretched to my limit, and am staring into those huge copper eyes on the other side of the plastic collar. So we engaged in a tug of war, knowing I could not pull too hard or the plastic would rip in her teeth spilling African violet and soil all over creation. Meanwhile, I am trying gain some purchase with the rest of my body, so I can use both hands on the violet. Through some miracle of twisting, which I paid dearly for later, I managed to grab my poor plant in both hands and fall back on the bed. In a normal world that would be the end of it but I do not live in a normal world. Harrrummmpppphhh! One overweight hair ball lands in the middle of me chasing the African violet which I am now holding over my head as she swats at it, trying to get upright with 30 pounds of cat holding me down. Eventually I managed to roll to the side and leverage myself out of the bed while avoiding a dirt shower and I ran to the bathroom where I tried to hide the poor plant in the window. She was hot on my tail but I prevailed in the end. The plant has survived in the window all day.
Another day of gardening and another night of pains in my shoulder as a reward for my hard work. Another strawberry tube is planted and a tomato tube. The German Queen is handing from the lucky nut tree which doesn’t even seem to notice the extra weight on its branch. I have a purple cabbage in a hanging pot whose hanging ability died long ago. Tomatoes and peppers have found other pots. The sage is sharing the strawberry tube with a dusty miller. It is a strange garden.

COMMENTARIES BY JANICE SCOTT-REEDER

Last night was horribly painful. I could not touch the tooth with the temp cap on it without the pain shooting all the way to my collar bone. I managed to “eat” some chocolate milk and a quart of buttermilk. Some pills and over a day later and I can almost put pressure on it! Today I managed yogurt and a fried egg with a really, really soft wheat roll. When they have you under general for dental work, I have discovered they can cause you way more pain than with a local because you don’t respond. Anyway, that is the last dental work I am planning this year. I just maxed my insurance and ran out of money. Two weeks and the permanent cap goes on. I really hope it stops hurting. I thought a root canal was supposed to eliminate the pain from a tooth?????
Napoleon is so upset about me being in pain that he is on my lap with the laptop desk. Normally he doesn’t try to crowd everything out to hold onto me, but tonight he is possessive. Then again, he normally doesn’t get a yogurt to lick and egg yoke and margarine in one nice swoop. It may not be concern for me as much as scavenger syndrome.
Fiona took his place all morning. That little mini kitty really generate the heat. She crawled against the small of my back and it was like having a little fire there. I think she has amplifier hit somewhere because she sure can purr.
George found one of my orchids in the sink and we are blaming Flame. Turtle has Flame almost hanging from the kitchen counter and she knows she is deviling that cat. I swear that little turtle can smile.
We had a nice afternoon garden shopping. I decided to try growing some bok choy. I know when my adopted mother tried it, she ran out of people to give it to. Apparently it can be very prolific. I also decided to try some purple kale. My real reason for the expedition was to get more strawberry plants and I couldn’t remember where I got them. You can get three little plants in a peat pot cheaper at Home Depot than Lowes. I also wanted a sage to round out my herb plants. Somewhere along the line, I picked up a Monkey’s Paw which I have wanted for years and a large Mexican sage for the bees/pixies. Wait until morning and they exit the hive and see what I bought them!
It is either too hot or too cold in this bedroom but it has never been just right in 37 years.

By late night, if you didn’t take that nap, there will be harsh words as everyone and thing is getting on your last nerve and it could wind up hurting you financially. Rest or you will spoil your Saturday night fun.

COMMENTARIES BY JANICE SCOTT-REEDER

Why a double forecast? I am preparing for my dental surgery tomorrow morning and I have no idea what shape I am going to be in when I get home. I have a cap, root canal, two each gingavectomies (whatever that is…do not tell me….ignorance is bliss.) and two fillings. So I think it is safe to say by jaw will be hurting and I may be drugged. At the moment I am trying to keep my mind off the fact I am supposed to have only a few sips of water and nothing more to eat. I am undergoing anesthesia or twilight sleep (whatever that is).
Turtle had a fit. The entire little kitchen island she was on collapsed and I had to move her back to the spare bathroom where she was safe from the cats. By nightfall, I had to move her to the kitchen counter because she was throwing rocks in the bathroom causing the cats to be lined up at the door blocking the hallway. It got so loud I could hear her.
It looks like Boots has moved into my yard. This afternoon he had a bowl of kibble and was wandering around. Neutered or not, I did not need another cat to take care of but I guess he is family.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

I am taking my birthday off. I will be back tomorrow with the forecast.
